 Child Prodigy on the drums at the age of three, a professional musician at ten, joined the Basie Band in his twenty third year at Joe William’s recommendation, chosen by Mel Lewis as his successor in the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, winner of the National Endowment for the Arts Composers Grant – Dennis Mackrel is one of the most highly talented and respected musicians, composers and arrangers on the international scene today. His work has been recorded and performed on Grammy-winning recordings by the Count Basie Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and the McCoy Tyner Big Band, for starters. Michael Philip Mossman

Michael Philip Mossman is arguably the world’s most in-demand “triple threat” in the jazz music industry. Achieving early fame as a young man as Music Director and trumpeter in Blue Note Records “Young Lions” group “Out Of The Blue”, he has gone on to amass a star-studded vitae including writing and performing for the Lincoln Center Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, among many others. Michael has toured and recorded with the entire phone book - Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Zawinul, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, the Charles Mingus Orchestra, Benny Carter, the Gil Evans Orchestra …and now the CNY Jazz Orchestra!  Michael is currently Director of Jazz Studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College.  An active Yamaha clinician, he has served as the resident artist for our own SummerJazz Workshop at the NY State Fair. This concert will open highlighting the incredible talents of some of our region’s best and brightest student talent, and Michael will take part in the scholastic component of this unique concert as well.

"Tribute to Thad and Mel" with Gary Smulyan

Baritone saxaphonist Gary Smulyan is critically
acclaimed as one of the major voices on the baritone saxophone today, and he’ll be bringing an armful of the best to be culled from the historic Thad Jones/Mel Lewis library for our season finale, plus “Celebration Suite” for Baritone Sax and Big Band, originally recorded by Gerry Mulligan. Gary currently performs with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Joe Lovano Nonet, the Dave Holland Octet and Big Band, the George Coleman Octet, the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band and the Tom Harrell Octet, as well as his own projects.
