Jazz in the City series kicks off summer at Leavenworth Park
LeadSafe CNY Stage features ATLAS
SYRACUSE NY – The innovative Jazz in the City public health concert series begins its annual journey through urban Syracuse at 6 p.m. on Thursday June 13th at Leavenworth Park, near Middle Ages Brewery. The series, founded in 2001 and now in its 20th year of programming, travels with a robust healthcare village led by Syracuse Community Health, over a dozen health and human service agencies, providers, and charities, and craft vendors, with food provided at this Thursday’s location by Limp Lizard and Skippy’s Ice Cream.
The LeadSafe CNY main stage will present Atlas, the funky 9-piece horn funk and soul group founded in 1981 that has become an icon of the upstate NY music scene, fronted by dual vocalists Tyler Owens and Lisa Denise. Opening act 1Accord Line Dance will perform in front of the stage to open the show at 6:00 p.m. and all are invited to join in to “dance for exercise” to start the three-hour show.
The “concert fair” events present America’s music in a family friendly atmosphere as the centerpiece of a mobile public health effort unique to American cities. As an incentive to be screened for individual health needs, all those going through the Syracuse Community Health tent will receive $5 New York State Lottery scratch-off tickets. Everyone attending receives free “goodie bags” filled with information provided by the attending healthcare providers.
“This grand opening concert is only the kickoff of our summer long celebration,” said Larry Luttinger, founder of CNY Jazz and series organizer. “I’m so proud that we can surround jazz and American music with public health access and education, highlighting our wonderful parks system as well.”
